Antique Tibetan Nambu Wool Blanket c1900 Bhutanese Wrap Textile 4'5" x 7'10"
Antique Tibetan Nambu Wool Blanket c1900 Bhutanese Wrap Textile 4'5" x 7'10"
An exceptional antique Tibetan Nambu wool blanket, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century and woven in the traditional twelve-panel format. Constructed from handwoven wool, the textile features distinctive tigma resist-dye decoration, creating rhythmic bands of cream, indigo, red, and soft earth tones across the surface.
Nambu textiles were highly prized throughout Tibet and the Himalayan region and were often used as garments, wraps, bedding, and ceremonial furnishings. Examples such as this are believed to have been woven in Tibet and were frequently worn by Bhutanese women as body wraps. The intricate panel construction and resist-dyed motifs reflect the sophisticated weaving traditions of the Himalayan plateau.
The elongated format, balanced geometric patterning, and beautifully muted natural colors make this textile an outstanding example of early Himalayan weaving. Equally suitable for collection, display, or use as a decorative wall hanging, it represents an increasingly scarce category of Tibetan textile art.
