Antique Indian/ Jain Silver Repoussé Box with Goddess Lakshmi
Antique Indian/ Jain Silver Repoussé Box with Goddess Lakshmi
A rare and intricately crafted antique Jain silver box featuring exceptional repoussé and chased decoration. The rectangular box is adorned with fourteen symbolic carvings associated with Jain and Indian religious traditions, including sacred animals, celestial motifs, and auspicious symbols. The lid is centered by a finely rendered image of Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of prosperity and good fortune, seated in relief and flanked by decorative elements culminating in two rounded finials.
The box is fitted with a front clasp and demonstrates the refined silverwork characteristic of late 19th and early 20th century Indian craftsmanship. The combination of Jain symbolism and Lakshmi imagery reflects the close historical relationship between Jain mercantile communities and traditional Indian auspicious iconography.
