An antique Tibetan - all wool rug, both warp and weft, measuring 55”x29”, and with vegetable and mineral dyes. This carpet has been woven by a master weaver and with motifs and details similar to Chinese rugs and soft to touch. The carpet combines a number of motifs that are distinctly Chinese and recreates them in a very unique Tibetan style - with the weaving technique, choice of colors, adaptation of motifs and the overall composition.
In Tibet, carpet weaving was a popular craft; the aristocracy would sometimes open studios to promote this craft. At these centers, carpets produced commercially were of a certain quality and designs were made that challenged the existing. Rugs such as this one would have been made at such centers - where one would have easy access to the dyed wool.
