This 19th C. antique Tibetan silver and gilt ceremonial teapot, is ornately decorated and covered with repousse work. The size of the teapot suggests its use for a single person or possibly two, and was probably made with a specific person in mind. It has all the classic elements of a traditional teapot - the makara headed spout, a dragon-like mythical creature as the handle, a removable lid with auspicious motifs. The pot has a height of 9 "x 9.75" x5.75" and weighs 926 grams.
Tibetan teapots are highly prized by collectors. Tea pots of various materials and details were historically found homes in Tibetan households and reflected uponthesocial and economic status ofthese homes. Iron and silver teapots with damascene silver inlay work such as this one was a rarity and highly prized. Teas drinking in Tibetan society remains as popular as in the past but traditional teapots for convenience and cost have been replaced by the modern thermos flasks.
Tibetan homes are witnessing a renewed interest in Tibetan teapots -for use during Tibetan ceremonies - weddings, new year and other occasions. Antique teapots that adorned the homes of the aristocracy - made of metal with intricate details and carvings are suddenly a rage once more.
