A necklace with coral beads on a 14kt chain
A vintage necklace consisting of 7 coral beads each 14mm in diameter on a 14kt gold chain. The chain measures 20” in length and weighs 28 grams.
Coral is not native to Tibet but was brought over many centuries to these highlands from the Mediterranean areas by traders. Coral beads were and are still prized and worn by both Tibetan men and women. They were collected by families, made into various jewelry pieces - mounted on gold and silver - ear rings, rings, necklaces, headpieces and also as prayer beads; and passed down as heirlooms from mother to daughter or given as part of a dowry. Coral and other precious beads is easily traded in the marketplace and it is considered to be an excellent store of value. Due to the scarcity of these beads, coral prices have only continued to rise.
