A collection of antique Tibetan ghaus in various metals- of varying sizes 4-1/4”, 4”and 3-1/2” in height , the ghaus vary slightly in width and depth. All three ghaus are adorned with carvings of the eight lucky signs and have a trifoliate arched open niche in the front. The ghaus have metal buckles on each sides to hold straps that attach to ghaus so they can be worn.
Ghau - an amulet container - usually contains sacred relics, mantras on paper, images of deities and revered gurus, small statues or clay Tsa Tsa. Ghau’s are also used as traveling shrines and carried by men and women’s on their physical self when traveling to distant lands.
These ghau’s are strung on thread with other beads and worn as a necklace. Sometimes the larger ones are strapped on the belt and carried on the side of the body. Strangers touching the gau is frowned upon as it could pollute its amuletic powers.
